Hiking in the winter

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Hiking doesn’t have to stop because the season changes. Sure the temperatures drop and you have to trek through snow, but with the proper attire you can continue to enjoy your walk outdoors. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Keep Dry: Getting wet then cold on the trails can kill you. Check the weather report for possibility of freezing rain if the temperature warms up.

Do not wear jeans.

Wear layers-because you will need to monitor your perspiration levels and take off when needed. Once you stop the perspiration will cause a chill.

Do not wear cotton. It keeps the moisture in the clothing therefore keeping you wet.

Materials: Synthetic -“wicks” sweat away from the body.

Always wear hats and gloves and bring an extra pair of socks

Wear Down coats and vests…as long as they remain dry they are the best.

Hydrate: Keep a bottle of water with you and make sure it doesn’t freeze.

Food: Bring snacks to keep your energy level up, being hungry and cold makes for a miserable experience.
