Travelling Ontario, Lodges v.s Hotels

It may come as a surprise that Ontario’s busiest travel season is during the summer months.  Sources say that 33 million people visit and travel Ontario, spending approximately $6 billion. When a survey was conducted, 90% of travelers said that they would prefer to travel their home province before exploring outside Ontario.  Shockingly, people residing outside of Ontario and even Canada expressed an interest in discovering what Ontario has to offer.  These people include residents of New York City, Montreal, Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo and Rochester.  Whether you are outdoor adrenalin junky or enjoy indoor laid back activities Ontario has it. Activities such as boating, fishing, performances, conservation parks, hiking trails, mountain biking, golfing, historic sites and museums, from the young to the old there is something for everyone.

It has been reported that most visiting Ontario travel between July and September, to spend quality time with friends and family. Those traveling, are looking for a location that offers everything and more for family getaways, romantic weekend for two and summer vacation homes, which is why stats show more and more people prefer private homes/cottages, over hotels followed by RV camping,  commercial cabins, B&B, resorts ,  and lodges, according to Stats Canada. This is good news for The Lodges at Blue Mountain that make it their goal to find that perfect vacation home. Whether you are staying for one night, a weekend, a week or even a month to enjoy all the sights and sounds that the area of Blue Mountain has to offer such as the Elvis festival, Wake stock, the British car show, BBQ festival, Salsa festival, the Jazz festival, the Village beach party, and so on, The Lodges at Blue Mountain will find you that home away from home.

Lakes, Rivers, Beaches: Keeping Cool and Safe

Friday, June 15th, 2012

The summer heat is on…and at record highs. So, many of you are planning weekend getaways to enjoy the great outdoors…in particular, lakes, ponds or beaches to keep cool.

We’ve gathered a list of reminders to keep your adventures fun and safe:

  • Always swim with a buddy
  • Young children should always be accompanied by an adult

Lakes and Rivers

  • Be mindful: Jagged rock, garbage or broken glass (wear protective footwear), weeds and grass
  • Avoid diving unless you know the depth of the water

Beaches

  • Be careful of  water current, it can be very powerful
  • Watch out for the signs and posting by life guards to know what the conditions of the water might be
  • Waves are powerful and can get rough

Weather: If a storm is looming, get out of the water. You don’t want to be in it if lightening strikes.

Have fun and play safe.

Fishing Like a Pro: Bighead, Pretty, Beaver and Nottawasaga Rivers

Warm weekends are here which means many Canadians will resume their boating life with friends and family – and that includes dropping their lines in hopes of a catching fish. From the online resource, Discover Boating Canada, take a look at these insider fishing tips from pro angler J.P. DeRose:

1. Line: Without a doubt, the biggest cause of frustration for anglers deals with line and the misuse of it. When using monofilament or fluorocarbon lines, spinning reels should be loaded with 10 lb test or less. Conversely, bait casting reels perform best with 12 lb test or more. When loading up with braided lines which have a fraction of the diameter of monofilament, 30 lb test or less on spinning and 40 lb test or more on bait casting are best. By following these guidelines you will achieve better casting performance and spend far less time trying to undo tangles.

The Top 5 Beaches in the Blue Mountain Collingwood Area

Friday, May 28th, 2010

After a long, cold winter, there’s nothing we Canadians love more than getting out of the city and hitting the beach. Sand, sun and swimming make for a perfect summer day. There’s no need to head south. When you’re having your vacation at Blue Mountain, there are tons of great beaches to choose from.

Georgian Bay Family Vacations

Memorial Park Beach

This lovely beach is located on the eastern side of Meaford on Grant Avenue. Offshore are “the Sisters”, large rocks jutting out from the waters of Georgian Bay. Legend has it two sisters swam too far from shore and drowned. Afterward, these rocks mysteriously appeared where the unlucky girls perished.

In spite of the gruesome tale of the Sisters, this park is a lovely place to spend the day. There are 400 metres of shoreline, a picnic area, a children’s playground, miniature golf and clean washrooms. Parking is free.

Wasaga Beach

Wasaga Beach (the beach, rather than the town) is the longest freshwater beach in the world, with 14 kilometres of white sandy shoreline and is designated a Blue Flag beach http://www.blueflag.ca . Located on Georgian Bay, east of Collingwood, this is probably the best-known beach in Ontario. Wasaga Beach is actually divided into six beach areas; five are family-friendly (including one that allows dogs) plus the main beach which is part of the entertainment district of the town.

Ontario Summer Family Vacation

In addition to the beach, there are watersports rentals, beach volley ball, washrooms, and shopping. There’s also the Nancy Island Historic site with a War of 1812 museum, a lighthouse and children’s activities in the summer.
